Most girls would have jumped up and down when they found out they were going to a Justin Bieber concert.
But when Katie Young, 12, of Starr, learned that she had beat out another girl for two tickets to Thursday night’s show, she started crying.
“We told her there was another girl who had really wanted them,” said Katie’s mother, Melissa Young. “A few minutes later she was in the back of the car crying. She said, ‘I hope you won’t think I don’t appreciate it, but I don’t think I would have a good time knowing there was someone else out there who wanted them more than me.’”
Katie, a sixth-grader at Starr Iva Middle School, won the tickets from Carolina Girls Apparel in Easley. Since November, the store has been allowing customers to register for tickets once a day. The concert is Thursday night at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville.
Katie’s mother entered her name in the store’s drawing as a surprise.
But, said Angel Rice, the owner of Carolina Girls, there was another girl who really wanted those tickets.
Rice said Ashley Titus, another of the store’s younger customers, made sure that someone in her family brought her to register for the tickets.
“They brought her in every single day, someone in her family did,” Rice said. “When we had the drawing, she was just devastated. We were all just heartbroken when she didn’t win.”
Instead, the tickets went to Katie. Her mother drove the hour to the store to get the tickets, and then got out of school early to tell her.
